ESRI Career Fair on Saturday

If you a have a professional background in software development, IT, finance, accounting, customer service, HR, graphics, marketing or admin support, and are looking for a job close to Yucaipa, you might be interested in the ESRI career fair on Saturday. Their press release:
Redlands, California—ESRI, the world's leading developer of geographic information system (GIS) mapping software, will host a career fair from 9:00 a.m. to noon Saturday, February 2, at its Redlands headquarters. Positions are available in many business and support areas including Software Development, Information Technology, Finance and Accounting, Customer Service, Human Resources, Graphics, Marketing, and Administrative Support.

Attendees will have the chance to meet with a representative from Human Resources, who will evaluate their resumé to see if their skills and experience fit with an open career opportunity. Information will also be available on ESRI and its innovative GIS technology.

"As a major employer in the Inland Empire, ESRI hires hundreds of professionals from our local communities each year," says Karen Hurlbut, ESRI spokesperson. "Because our company is growing, we have an ongoing need for additional employees and rely on local professionals to help us be successful. We look forward to hosting the career fair and giving prospective candidates the opportunity to visit our beautiful campus and meet our staff."

"Before joining ESRI, I commuted to downtown Los Angeles, four hours a day for two and a half years," says Tosha Cornish, an executive assistant at ESRI who lives in Highland. "I heard about ESRI from several fellow commuters, and it was the best move I could have made. I now work 15 minutes from home and am able to have lunch with my children."

ESRI has been growing steadily since its founding in 1969. Construction of a new corporate headquarters and technology center is under way, a project that is expected to be completed by the end of the year. ESRI is also renovating a nearby building to be used as its Learning Center, where customers from around the world will attend training courses on GIS technology.

ESRI develops computer software used to store, manage, visualize, analyze, and publish geographic data. The technology is used in many ways including analyzing crime, health, and business data. Recently, GIS software has been used to study the migration of whales in the Pacific Ocean, analyze shoppers' buying habits in Norway, and map the perimeters and evaluate the potential paths of the Southern California wildfires. On a local level, the Redlands Police Department, University of Redlands, and A.K. Smiley Public Library all use ESRI technology.

ESRI employs 4,000 people worldwide, 1,700 of whom are based at its headquarters. The company's GIS software is used in more than 300,000 organizations worldwide including each of the 200 largest cities in the United States, most national governments, more than two-thirds of Fortune 500 companies, and more than 7,000 colleges and universities.

The career fair will be held in the ESRI Café, 380 New York Street in Redlands (enter from Redlands Boulevard). For more information, visit www.esri.com/careerfair. Those unable to attend can apply online at www.esri.com/careers.

Now and Then

Congratulations to 13-year-old Yucaipan Paris Edlyn Deesing, who won the Center for Science in the Public Interest's Junk-Free Schools video contest. Her video, titled "Here and Now" focuses on getting junk food out of schools. From the article in the News Mirror:
Her winning movie shows a mother of yesteryear giving her daughter a well-rounded meal, then the movie flashes forward in time to show how this same busy mother may require her child to eat food from the school's vending machine. The surprise ending is quite entertaining.

In 2006 Paris won the National Electronic Music Composition Talent Search for her composition "Cirque du Chats". She used her compositional skills to score the video herself. I'll confess I don't understand the recurring "London Bridges" theme, but overall the music complements the video nicely.

Watch the video below:

(Yes, the mom in the film is played by Paris' mom, who hopefully isn't feeding her junk food.)

Local Blogging and Resolutions for the New Year

One of the fun things about blogging is meeting people I would otherwise have never met. Most of my acquaintances are electronic only, with our only contact through blog comments or e-mails or Facebook messages. That's why it felt like a bit of a special occasion on Saturday when I met Jessie, a former Yucaipan and current Beaumont blogger, in real life. You should check out her blog and her book about healthy eating, Eat Your Colors (recently profiled in the News Mirror).

Anyway, she encouraged me to write more about my personal experiences and thoughts. Way back in ought six, when I started this blog I had a bit more of that, but over time it just kind of petered out. So that's my New Year's resolution, gentle readers, more blogging about my personal view of Yucaipa. Stay tuned!

(Oh, and one of the things we talked about was self-promotion, so in that spirit: if you have a geeky and/or nerdy bent, you might want to check out one of my other blogs, Women in Science or Biology in Science Fiction)
