Yucaipa Fire Approaches Houses in Chapman Heights

The fire currently burning on the north side of Oak Glen Road appears to be approaching the approaching the houses along Blue Grass Road in the Chapman Heights housing development. CDF firefighters are out in force, and there is a helicopter and fire-retardant-dropping plane trying to battle it back.

I hope those of you that live in the neighborhood below the Jerry Lewis soccer fields are safe.

Yucaipa Music & Nightlife: January 2-8

It's the first week of 2009, the sun is shining and there are things to do and places to go! Actually, there is a bit of a lull in entertainment after the holidays, but things should be picking up again over the next couple of weeks.

And in local music news:
According to the News Mirror, local band Idasas (featuring Yucaipan Rikki Sterling who got an on-camera intervention for his drinking problem) was on a reality show called Rock Bottom on "National TV" back in October on upstart music channel Fuse TV (channel 120 on our Time Warner cable). You can watch several Idasas clips from the show on the FuseTV web site, including a bit called "People Stripping" (which is PG-13) and a discussion with their old manager & promoter. There's a bit more on their appearance published last October in the Press-Enterprise. There's no indication on their Myspace profile where Idasas will be playing gigs, but they've shown up fairly often at Angel's, so keep an eye on the schedule if you'd like to hear them play (And please News Mirror editor, proofread - the band's URL is not myspace/idasa, it's www.myspace.com/idasas. And you could have actually mentioned what station the show was on - it took me 30 seconds of Googling to find the info. Or, you know, your reporter could have asked.)

Happy New Year!

I know you can't tell from my blogging, but I just got back from visiting my parents up in the Bay Area for Christmas. I had a lovely holiday, but it's nice to be home. Tonight we are going over to a small party at a friend's house. We might drop into a local drinking establishment to see a couple of other friends who are playing in the band. Nothing too fancy or flashy, just ringing in 2009 with people we care about.

I hope you and yours have a fun and safe New Year's Eve!

Wednesday night we move from 2008 to 2009, and there are lots of ways to celebrate. You can gather together with your family and friends or you can go out for an end-of-the-year party. Casual or dressy, loud music or quiet cheer, there is something for everyone.

Below I've listed a few of the local options for live music on New Year's Eve. There are fewer than I expected that I could find details for so I went a bit further afield than Yucaipa - feel free to add more listings in the comments.

So Christmas has almost arrived - have you finished your shopping yet? If you haven't, you could head out to Target or Barnes & Noble or one of the department stores down in Redlands or San Bernardino. Sure you'll find something there, but why not pick up something local? Something that is uniquely Yucaipa? And as a bonus you won't have to deal with traffic or parking.

A few suggestions:

Chocolates

Most people would welcome a gift of fine candy - I know I would - and Granlund's is the place to get it. Or perhaps a gift certificate that could be used for ice cream when the weather gets warmer.

Pie, pie, pie

As long as there isn't snow, it's a quick drive up to Oak Glen to buy a pie or other applacious goodies.

Phat Choppers Gear

If bikes are your giftees thing, she or he might like gear from Phat Choppers.

Handmade Jewelry or Art

It's too late to place an order to be shipped, but the handmade items created by Yucaipa's Etsy sellers might be available for direct purchase. I especially like bshaw's sterling sliver paisley pendent and this screen print by BlackDogInk.

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas . . .

I can't believe it's snowing - and even sticking a bit! It sounds like the kids down the street are having a blast, even though it's pretty damp, rather than fluffy. Good for icy snowballs, that.

According to weather reports tomorrow's high temperature is supposed to be about 50, so I supposed it will all be gone by mid-morning. Oh well.

Yucaipa Music & Nightlife: December 12-18

There's lots to do this weekend!

Saturday is the annual Yucaipa Christmas Parade. It starts on California street at noon, and will head down Yucaipa Boulevard to City Hall. Santa will be on the last float.

Saturday is also Operation Santa Claus, run by the Yucaipa Police Department. Kids are welcome at any of five locations to meet Santa and receive candy from the PD's float (I guess no tossed candy during the parade this year).
The stops:

5:20 PM at Dunlap Elementary School
6:00 PM at Von's Parking Lot
6:45 PM at the Bryant & Oak Glen Road Stater Bros.
7:30 PM at Sail Drug
8:15 PM at the County Line Road 99cent Store parking lot.

The VFW (12235 California St.) will hold it's annual party for children immediately after the parade. Santa will appear at 3pm. The pulic is welcome.

Storm Troopers Invade Yucaipa!

OK, not really. But the 501st Legion - aka "Vader's Fist" - will be appearing at Chapman Heights Elementary on Wednesday, November 19th from 6pm-8pm. The event is "Family Night" for the school's first ever Book Fair. It sounds like a fun combination of books and SF - two of my favorite things!

The Book Fair itself is running from Nov 17-21 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Wow, third week of November already. There's not too much going on this weekend, but now is also the time to purchase tickets for events in December - Christmas events are already starting to sell out!

And on a serious note, there are lots of people in our area who could use a helping hand. KFROG and Stater Bros. have teamed up for a holiday food drive. You can drop off canned food donations inside the Stater Bros. on Bryant or Yucaipa Blvd through November 26th. KFROG will be on-site of the Stater Bros. on Bryant on Wednesday, November 19th from 11am-2pm. There will also be a food drive for the I.E. Needy at Angel's Roadhouse on Saturday, November 15th from noon-3pm.

Massive Earthquake Tomorrow!

At 10am tomorrow is the Great Southern California Shake Out, in which organizations across SoCal pretend there has been a magnitude 7.8 earthquake on the Southern San Andreas Fault. That would be a bad one:

In an earthquake of this size, the shaking will last for nearly two minutes. The strongest shaking will occur near the fault (in the projected earthquake, the Coachella Valley, Inland Empire and Antelope Valley). Pockets of strong shaking will form away from the fault where sediments trap the waves (in the projected earthquake, it would occur in the San Gabriel Valley and in East Los Angeles).

Considering that the San Andreas fault runs near the edge of Yucaipa, we'd definitely be hit hard. It sounds like a regional disaster drill is a good idea.

So be forewarned: are out and about near one of the drill sites tomorrow you may see scattered bodies and emergency vehicles. The closest site to us is the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands, which will also have related presentations about earthquakes (9:30am-1pm).

Loma Linda University Medical Center is also participating in a full scale drill.

So, last weekend we headed out to the Live Oak Canyon Pumpkin Patch, and it's well worth the trip if you are willing to battle the traffic jam at the Oak Glen/I-10 interchange. They have great bands playing in the afternoons, the seating is in the shade, and you can even bring a picnic. Can't beat that for free.

Also if apples are your thing, there is still fruit to be picked up in Oak Glen. The Riley's Farm newsletter also says:

As always, in October, we have great music with the Bost Family Traditions singing gospel and bluegrass in the Packing Shed and House & von Arx providing classical and folk in the Colonial Public house.

So get out and enjoy some music this weekend!

West Nile Hits Yucaipa: Beware the bite!

I was a bit dismayed to read the headline in today's News Mirror that the West Nile Virus infection has been confirmed here in Yucaipa - one person is sick and one horse has died. There is no treatment for West Nile Virus infection: unlike bacteria, viruses are not affected by antibiotics. The good news is that less than 1% of people who are infected will develop a severe illness, but among those who do, the fatality rate is between 3% and 15%.

West Nile is transmitted from infected birds to humans by mosquitoes, so the best protection is to not get bit:

Wear insect repellent, especially if you are outside at dusk or dawn.
Make sure there is no stagnant water in your yard
Be sure you have window and door screens that prevent mosquitoes from entering your home

And if you find a dead bird or squirrel, report it via the California dead bird hotline.

Q & A with City Council Candidate Erik Sahakian

Election season is upon us, and there are a number of candidates running for Yucaipa City Council. With that in mind, I've asked the candidates to answer a few questions.

Q&A with candidate Erik Sahakian is the first in the series:

How long have you lived in Yucaipa?
I moved to Yucaipa in 2006.

What do you like best about living in Yucaipa?
What I love most about Yucaipa is that it is a family-oriented community with gorgeous natural surroundings and a "small town" rural feel.

Even though you obviously care about Yucaipa enough to run for office, no city is perfect. What do you like least about living in Yucaipa?
The biggest problem I see with Yucaipa is that we lack the appropriate infrastructure for a city our size. We have far less police officers than we actually need, poor streets, no sidewalks in most of the city, no animal control, a run down library, and few locations to shop. It's painfully frustrating to watch "our" potential sales tax revenue being effectively donated to Redlands, Beaumont, and San Bernardino for them to use to improve the infrastructure within their own city for their own citizens with our money.

Do you currently have children enrolled in the Yucaipa-Calimesa Unified School District?
My five year old daughter is currently enrolled in kindergarten in the Yucaipa-Calimesa Unified School District.

What do you think are the most important issues facing Yucaipa over the next five years?
The most important issue facing Yucaipa is the choice of what direction we're going to take regarding commercial development and sales tax revenue. The choice is whether we're going to continue to focus on our past and resist responsibly developing this community for the benefit of future generations or whether we're going to seize the opportunities before us to effectively ensure that Yucaipa's future is one of economic health, longevity, and success.

How do you envision Yucaipa ten years from now?
I would love to see a "future" Yucaipa that is considered the "crown jewel" of the Inland Empire. My vision is of a "small town" city with good streets, low crime, plenty of parks, high property values, diverse community involvement, a state-of-the-art library, sidewalks, proper animal control, plenty of convenient shopping, and a solid financial foundation for generations to come.

According to the Yucaipa City Budget (http://www.yucaipa.org/cityBudgetCip/index.php) the majority of city revenue comes from taxes. What do you think is the best way for Yucaipa to meet it's budgetary needs for the near future?
As new housing development begins to draw to a close the City can no longer afford to rely so heavily on Development Impact Fees (which are one-time fees) for revenue. Furthermore, cities are on the bottom of the totem pole when property tax revenue is divided up. The time has come that Yucaipa realize what almost every other city in America already knows, and that is a significant portion of revenue must come from sales tax, which is an ongoing source or revenue.

It seems to me that in the current economic climate there is a real risk that new housing and retail developments might be abandoned before completion (hopefully not the case for the Chili's on Yucaipa Blvd.). Do you agree that this is a potential problem? What can the city do to help prevent that from happening?
Unfortunately, this isn't a "potential" problem anymore because it's already happening. There is a large strip of land that is less than a mile from my home which was supposed to be developed as condos but instead has been abandoned by the developer for the last 2 years. This poses an interesting challenge for the City. I'm not sure the City can prevent this from happening but they can certainly do a better job of discouraging it from happening. Any development should be treated as an "interest" of the City since it either positively or negatively impacts our community. Obviously half-built or vacant buildings are a negative impact because they cause blight and are targets of potential vandalism and other crimes. The City needs to take a more active role and see themselves as more of a "partner" when it come to stalled development. By communicating frequently with developers issues may come to light that the City can perhaps help remedy.

Yucaipa is home to a wide range of demographic groups, from seniors on fixed incomes living in rent-controlled mobile home parks to more affluent young families living in Chapman Heights and other recently built housing developments, plus lots of people in-between. How can the City of Yucaipa assure that everyone's needs are adequately served by city services?
For one, by ensuring adequate representation for all those groups. According to the 2008 Housing Element approximately 60% of Yucaipa is under the age of 44. The City does a good job of serving the needs of certain groups of individuals but not everybody. Bringing more diversity to the City Council will be a step in the right direction for actually providing representation for "all" citizens. Once we have a Council which reflects the diversity of our city, we'll be in a much better position to ensure that everyone's needs are being adequately served by city services.

There seems to have been a lot of local crime in the news of late, from drug labs to armed robbery. Do you think crime is becoming a problem in Yucaipa? If so, what can be done to improve the situation?
Crime is most definitely becoming a problem in Yucaipa. One needs only to read the newspaper on a regular basis to realize that criminals are becoming more and more bold and brazen in the crimes they commit. I strongly feel that we have half as many police officers on the streets as we need. Currently, we have one of the lowest crime rates in San Bernardino County but that is no excuse to let our guard down or to pat ourselves on the back. I believe that one of the basic responsibilities of government is to provide for the safety and security of its citizens. This is why we need to hire more police officers to patrol our streets. A stronger police presence will make criminals think twice about committing a crime in Yucaipa.

Reading the letters to the editor in the News Mirror, I get the sense that there are numerous teenagers just hanging around and getting into trouble. Do you think the city should provide more recreational options for its teenage residents?
Absolutely. I have heard firsthand from many teenagers who live in Yucaipa that there isn't anything to do here. It's good that we have a skate park, community center, and sports facilities but we need more recreational choices. I would love for there to be a movie theater, a bowling alley, and more focus on cultural development. This is a lofty dream but can you imagine one day having a civic theater with ample seating for plays and concerts?

What would you bring to the Yucaipa City Council that the other candidates do not?
The unique combination of my educational background and work experience makes me stand out from all the other candidates. I have an undergraduate degree in political science/public administration, an M.B.A., and work experience in both the public and the private sector. I have worked for municipal as well as county government, and I have owned my own business. I've been responsible for such tasks as implementing million dollar budgets, supervising employees, successfully managing projects (always under budget), building a new business from the ground up, and managing millions of dollars worth of real estate.

Yucaipa Music & Nightlife: October 3-9

It's the first week of October and the rumor is that the weather is going to cool off over the weekend. I'm hoping that turns out to be true, because I'm tired of the hot weather. I'm also feeling like I should be hitting up WallyWorld for Halloween decorations. In my neighborhood the skeletons, fake gravestones and giant spiders far outnumber the political signs. I need at least a pumpkin just to fit in. Fortunately, there are pumpkins galore, both up in Oak Glen (I know Riley's Farm has them) and at the Live Oak Canyon pumpkin patch. I may be checking them out this weekend.

(Also, don't forget that Friday evening is the Past Pleasures Car Club Classic Car Cruise in the Ross/Vons center parking lot.)

When I lived in Boston, fall was my favorite season. The air was cool and crisp and the leaves turned brilliant colors. I suppose it's still like that, but it's kind of hard to remember when temperatures are still up into the 90s in the last week of September. Fresh & Easy Opens in Yucaipa Tomorrow

Tomorrow morning there will be one more local option for buying groceries when the new Fresh & Easy market opens on Yucaipa Blvd. just below Oak Glen. Fresh & Easy is a division of Tesco, a British supermarket and retail chain. According to a recent article in the Washington Post, it's targeting shoppers who want convenience:

The smaller, convenience-sized stores seek to woo shoppers who are looking for ready-to-eat meals and fresh produce, and might not have time for a trip to a full-scale grocery store.

A little more descriptively, it's been called "an IKEA version of Trader Joe's". So look for fresh organic produce, prepared foods and wine at reasonable prices.

Fresh & Easy apparently attempst to be as green as it can, by recycling or reusing shipping and display materials, transporting food in "environmentally friendly trailers" and building a distribution center in Riverside with California's "largest solar roof installation". They also try to be good for both the customers and employees:

Fresh & Easy has gone to great lengths to ensure all its private label products contain no added trans fats, artificial colors or flavors, and have limited amounts of preservatives. Deliveries will be made daily to each store to ensure all products are as fresh as possible.
Each Fresh & Easy store will employ approximately 20 to 30 people. The company interviews on-site at each store location, aiming to hire from the local neighborhood. Fresh & Easy intends all store employees will work 20 hours a week or more, and be eligible for comprehensive health care and other benefits. Entry-level positions will pay well over the minimum wage, starting at $10 an hour in California, and offer a potential bonus of up to 10% on top.

So assuming the food is tasty and the prices are reasonable, it's a win for us consumers, Fresh & Easy and its employees. I'm looking forward to checking it out.

Yucaipa's S1 Competes on MTV's Top Pop Group

Every time I read about MTV I feel oh so old. I can remember when the station launched, back when I was in high school. I didn't see it much, because we didn't have cable. But I did see it occasionally at a friend's house, and believe it or not, all that it showed back in those days was music videos. As far as I can tell, music videos are rare these days, and most of MTV's broadcast hours are filled with "reality" shows. At least one of those shows is music related: MTV'S Top Pop Group.

What's particularly cool is that one of the nine groups competing for the $100,000 prize comes from right here in Yucaipa. The members of the hip-hop/R&B group S1 are Keith "Kjae" Kelsaw, Christian "Traxx" Williams and Shapan "ShayDot" Thomas, and they've been making music together for the past five years. The Press Enterprise did a profile of the band:

"I'm a little nervous about it, but I feel they're going to do great," said Keith Kelsaw Sr., Kjae's father who also manages the group with wife Sonia.

He said the group has evolved over the years from a New Edition type of straight-up R&B to the urban pop sound it has today.

"We've gone through a lot of changes," Kelsaw said.

Kjae sings and Traxx and ShayDot rap. All three write the songs.

S1 got their first taste of fame a couple of years ago when their song "I Found a Girl on MySpace" brought them to the attention of MySpace who featured the group. According to their Top Pop Group bio, their "look" is part of what sets them apart.

On any given day, Traxx, Kjae and Shay Dot can be found sporting their signature collared shirts, ties and sweaters, which they say are a huge hit with the ladies. The boys believe their threads complement their edgy sound, which is a blend of R&B, hip-hop and rap.

So far S1 has survived the first round of elimination. You can watch last week's performance. You can listen to S1's original music on their Myspace profile.

MTV's Top Pop Group airs Thursday nights at 10pm. Watch it and give them your vote.

Night on the Town, Redlands-Style

Ten years ago yesterday, I put on a spiffy costume and had a wonderful party with my boyfriend-turned-husband, family and friends. Aren't we happy looking?
Anyway, we wanted to celebrate our 10 year anniversary with a nice dinner. Most of our dining out of late has been at places where a quantity is more important than quality - not that the food is bad at those places, but we wanted something special. We finally decided on Farm Artisan Foods in steamy Redlands*. We've been there before (although not recently), so we knew that they specialized in straightforward dishes - many with an Italian flavor - using high quality local ingredients. We weren't disappointed.

We started with an appetizer, the Artisan cheese sampler. There were small tastes of camembert, gouda, asiago, machengo and one other I can't remember the name of, served with freshly baked bread. A great way to start.

For the entree, I was hoping to try the veal raised by the 4-H club of Yucaipa**, but it was unfortunately unavailable. Instead I ordered the duck breast with roasted beet sauce, served with polenta and green beans. My husband had the fillet mignon with mashed potatoes, oyster mushrooms and asparagus. Everything was delicious, and the portion size was just right - satisfying without being overfilling. Here we are enjoying our meal (I cleverly wore a dress that color-coordinated with the walls):
To finish off our meal, we shared the rich espresso chocolate truffles with chocolate mousse, with freshly brewed coffee as a balance to the sweetness. Delicious.

All in all, our dinner was excellent, and I'd happy eat there again, although the prices (most entrees are $20-30) make it a special occasion destination for us.

So, dinner was over and the night was young. Since it was 9ish, we decided to head over to The Vault to check out the band. It turns out the show didn't start until 9:30, but being early meant we could find a place to sit, something I've found more important as I've gotten older. So, sipping a cool Bombay Sapphire martini, we listened to the funky and jazzy sounds of Shoppy. Impressive for a three-piece band, especially the keyboard/saxophone player who switched easily between the two instruments. Nice. We also took a Myspace-style picture of ourselves:

On our way back to the car we decided to check out Redlands Underground, which turned out to be a restaurant-bar hosting Saturday night karaoke. Definitely not our thing, so we headed home. And that was our night on the town, Redlands-style. A+ would do again.

* It was 10 degrees warmer in Redlands than it was up here in Yucaipa. And humid to boot.

I can't believe it's the last week of July already! My inlaws have left the southland after a nice visit (thankfully not as hot as it could have been), and we are regrouping for a visit from my brother who arrives this weekend. Here's what's up for the Independence Day weekend - lots of music and explosions! I suppose this isn't very loyal to Yucaipa, but there are a number of free music options tomorrow if you are willing to drive a few towns over:

Moreno Valley (Morrison Park/Mountain View Middle School, Dracaea Avenue and Morrison Street, details): Eddie Money and Dooh Wah Riders are playing at the annual Family Funfest, 7:30-9 p.m., concluding with a "Fireworks Extravaganza" at 9 p.m. Free!
Beaumont (Stewart Park; 9th and Orange, flier): The Basix (80s & 90s) 5pm-7pm, Christopher Cross 7pm-9pm, concluding with "Pyrospectacular". Free! (and now I have "Sailing" in my head)
Redlands (Sylvan Park, University St, details): Picnic begins at 10am, Classic Alibi (classic rock) 11am, Redlands Fourth of July Band, noon. "Happy Birthday America" parade beginning at 4pm. That part's free. Evening festivities are in the University of Redlands Ted Runner Stadium beginning at 7pm, with live music from the Redlands Fourth of July Band and Elvis, Cher and Rod Stewart impersonators. The finale is a Pyro Spectacular firework show. Tickets for the evening show are $7 in advance, $10 at the gate. You can buy tickets at Sylvan Park until 2:30pm.

Remember all personal fireworks are illegal here in Yucaipa, so be safe and let the professionals create the explosions.

First Big Fire of the Season

If you look to the northeast right now you'll be able to see a big plume of smoke. That's a fire that looks like it's to the north of Jefferson St.. There's at least one helicopter dumping water on it, so hopefully it will be out soon.

5pm update: it looks like the fire is climbing up the ridge, rather than down, so that's good news. The firefighting planes are out dropping their bright orange chemicals right now. (Click photo for larger image). There's a bit about it in the Merc:

Winds were light in the afternoon, but officials anticipate they will pick up as the sun sets, Lardner said.
About 150 firefighters were battling the blaze as temperatures climbed to 100 degrees. They were aided by two helicopters and two air tankers.

According to the San Bernardino County Sun's latest update (4:45PM), the burned area is up to 250 acres and they are investigating the cause. It's pretty safe to say it wasn't lightning.

Update 7/5: According to InciWeb the Ridge Fire is now 85% contained and the fire crews are mopping up.

Election Tomorrow

I'm sure any of you readers who live in San Bernardino County's 3rd District are well aware of tomorrow's election. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has been receiving numerous campaign fliers and attack ads, and multiple robocalls every day for the past week or so. Frankly, I am sick of both of the candidates, Neil Derry (currently on the San Bernardino city council) and Dennis Hansberger (the incumbent). Apparently Hansberger is running behind in the polls - in Yucaipa pollsters found 42% going for Derry, 21% going for Hansberger and 37% undecided - which could explain the desperate campaigning.

The Press-Enterprise endorses Derry:

Neil Derry is the better choice in this race. Derry, a San Bernardino city councilman, can provide a more professional approach and a better sense of ethics. Incumbent Dennis Hansberger, who has served a total of 24 years on the board, is unlikely to offer those badly needed improvements.
Derry understands the need for the county to impose development fees to fund roads, facilities and services. And he supports a more coordinated approach to planning. However, Derry will need to demonstrate independence from the public employee unions that back him, along with other special interests, to show voters he is serious about ethics.

The San Bernardino County Sun endorses Hansberger.

Personally, I'm not overly keen on either candidate, and I'll probably decide before I head out to vote tomorrow. Now if one of them had proposed extending the no call list to political campaigners, I'd give my endorsement in a second*.

Also on the ballot are two statewide propositions on eminent domain, Prop 98 and Prop 99. Prop 98 not only would prohibit government from taking private property for private use, but would also prohibit rent control. Prop 99 focuses on protecting owner-occupied homes.

I personally don't think either proposition is the best way to stop the potential for eminent domain abuse, so I'll be voting "no" on both. The Press-Enterprise agrees, endorsing "no" both, while the Sun says "no" on 98 and "yes" on 99. If you aren't sure, check out BallotPedia's article on California Proposition 98 versus California Proposition 99.

* According to this San Diego Union-Tribune article, California law requires that a "live" person has to come on line before the recording, but I don't think any of the calls I received has a "live" person at the beginning. Unfortunately to complain I'd have to figure out who was actually making the call, and I'd rather just hang up/erase the message without having to listen to it.

Wow, that's some seriously wild weather we had today. It looks like the thunderstorms here in Yucaipa were nothing compared to the tornadoes in Moreno Valley, mudslides that closed 60 near Beaumont and San Timoteo Canyon, and flash flooding in Live Oak Canyon. Yikes. Hopefully Memorial Day won't be a wash out.

May 24: Oak Glen After Dark Jazz: Live jazz and dinner at Anna's Restaurant in Oak Glen. Advance purchase required, $40. Call 797-2629 for information.
June 6: "A Spaghetti Feast" at Kopper Kettle Kafe, with an Italian dinner (duh) and comedy entertainment by the Yucaipa High School Theatre Department, who will be performing scens from "Shakespeare Abridged." $10 adults, $5 children 11 and under, 5pm-8pm. Reservations required for parties of six or more. Call 797-2932. The event is a fundraiser for the YHS Theatre Department and travel to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
June 7: Hometown Jamboree with Riley's Mountaineers at Los Rios Rancho

An Evening of Cars, Comedy, God and Fun @ Yucaipa Christian Church (12954 Bryant St.): car show, dinner and entertainment from "Christian, corporate" comedian Jeff Allen. Tickets are $15 for everything, or $10 just for the comedy show. Proceeds go to the Yucaipa Valley Pregnancy Counseling Center.

There will be guest speakers, Honor Guard, bugler, and songs by Tom Shalhoub. 10AM. After the ceremony there will be a public barbecue at the American Legion post (1167 California St), with music by Bob Henandez and the Starlight Wranglers.

"Crafton Hills Theatre in transformed into a Club set in the 40's, the style of the show is similar to recent graphic novels. Think Sin City meets Chicago live on the Crafton stage. They'll be Dancing to songs like Fever, Peter Gunn and Stem Heatand others, live jazz singers singings songs like "One for my baby" and "Blues in the Night" and gritty dialogue performed by the darkest of characters Club Noir will be choreographed by Stephanie Gomez and directed by Tom Bryant. The highlight of the evening is Nightmare's Kiss a dance theater piece by Frank Palmer and Tom Bryant."
